Controller

Kimball Union is seeking an experienced Controller. Exercising independent judgement, the Controller position is accountable for the accounting operations of the Academy, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the Academy's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.  The Controller is responsible for the direct supervision of accounting staff including the Senior Accountant and Disbursement Cycle Manager and Staff Analyst.
 
 
Organizational Relationships:  The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
 
ABOUT THE POSITION
 
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversees the monthly financial close and issuance of balance sheets, managerial operating reports, and departmental expense reports.
  • Oversees the maintenance of strong financial controls over financial reporting including the preparation of monthly account analysis for general ledger accounts, reconciliation and resolution of differences between subsidiary ledgers and general ledger accounts, cash account reconciliations, appropriate segregation of duties, and the establishment of redundant staff support for critical operating tasks.
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Oversees the student contracting, billing and collection processes and manages collection efforts for overdue student accounts. Also oversees the campus daycare tuition billing. 
  • Manages all aspects of the disbursement system including the timely processing and accurate coding of vendor invoices, primarily through the accounts payable system.
  • Oversees the administration and accounting for student escrow and banking accounts, and school store accounting.
  • Oversees the financial operations of the Academy’s auxiliary revenue programs including summer camps and other facility and equipment rentals.
  • Works with the CFO to coordinate the annual budget process.  Challenges personnel on budget assumptions to ensure they are realistic.
  • Responds to inquiries from the Head of School, CFO, and department heads regarding expenses, budgets, and other matters.
  • Coordinates the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal government regulations relating to financial reporting, tax filings, and charitable giving.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
 
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting etc.)
  • Understanding of data analysis and forecasting
  • Working knowledge of MS Office and experience with accounting software
  • Well-organized with ability to prioritize
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business is preferred
  • Professional certification (e.g. CPA) is a plus
 
WORK SHIFT
The work shift for this position is full-time and will be based on the assignment and needs of the Academy.  The workday is an eight-hour shift, Monday through Friday and student registration day one Sunday in late August.
